— Your work has a strong sense of ritual. What initially drew you to explore this feeling?
When I started I was personally going through a moment of changes and I felt the need to explore other sides of me that weren’t awake before. Fire is a way of connecting with something that lives outside our mundane lives and rituals are about that, creating small parallel worlds outside our lives at a specific moment in time.

— What elements do you like to have in place to foster a deep working practice when creating? And, alternatively, how do you like to take pause and recalibrate after intense periods of output?
I don’t think I could describe exactly what sets the mood for me to enter that creative aura but I can say it has to do with the physical space I’m in and an expansive feeling inside me. This means sometimes I need to move objects or elements in my studio until I find that emotion is there and then I’m able to start.
Since I work better when I’m on my own the best way to recalibrate after hours or days of work is to see friends or spend time with my son and partner. I also love to go to antique markets and get lost in looking at small objects that later inspire my work.

— We love your wax works. We imagine it is such an interesting material to work with. What other textures or colours do you like having around you?
I love fabrics and texture wise I’m always drawn to touch clothes or antique pieces of textile that come from noble materials. I think in general I’m attracted to touch any object that I find fascinating and love the contrast between elements, the roughness of stones vs the fragile glass or the cold smooth metals. Touch for me is as important as sight, it helps me connect with anything I’m admiring or creating. — Coming towards the end of the year, do you practice any rituals to mark the timing, or perhaps to welcome in the new year?

Every once in a while I gather with some close friends in a special location that can be any place, outdoors or not, and we customize it depending on the season to share food, rituals and emotions in this time/space created by us. We always have to bring a special object and I think it’s very symbolic of our friendship. We haven’t done one for the end of this year but for sure will make one for the coming one.

— How did you feel on the Anaak shoot? Did the garment inspire any new ways of being?
I loved to wear the silk dress with socks around my studio, it made me feel very light but powerful at the same time.
— What do you hope 2023 brings for you?
I like the unexpected but I hope that includes opportunities to work on personal projects and time with my birth family.
